A Guide for Beginers

Welcome!

I started this Blog because I've found that there is a real lack of useful information with well-reasoned opinions for players of Star Trek Online to figure out how to succeed at challenging content or just improve their characters. On this site, I want to provide information on how to generally improve your character/gameplay. I'll be posting conceptual ideas, tips, tricks, and even character build guides. The build guides will likely be a big help as they will provide in-depth information about how to build a solid character.

If you already are in the 75k DPS channel or have billions of Energy Credits stored in Keys and/or other commodities, this site won't help you and, frankly, it's not intended to. Why would such a person need help? It's for people who are struggling with content or just want to know how to get better. I'm here to help.

The Parsers in STO - SCM (STO Combat Meter) and CombatLog Reader (CLR)

I've mentioned parsing and DPS numbers many times, so I thought I should give a link to help people find the parser. Many thanks to guys in the DPS Channels that make it possible.

Click here to download and install SCM.

Step #1: Download the file.

Step #2: Install the program.

Step #3: You will need to type this exact string into your chat in STO: /combatlog 1
That will enable the combat log in game. It doesn't matter which chat, btw. This must be done each time you login in order for SCM to have a log to read for that day.

NOTE: Until you do this and enter combat, there will be no combat log to parse!

Step #4:Click "Browse" in upper left corner. Navigate to the Combat log file and select it.

NOTE: It's typically located at: C:\Program Files (x86)\Star Trek Online_en\Star Trek Online\Live\logs\GameClient for Windows users.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Click here to download and install CLR.

Step #1: Be sure to make a Dropbox account in order to download the file. It's free, quick, and it's not going to give you a virus. (Assuming you don't already have an account with them.)

Step #2: Be sure to select the correct version for your computer. Select the version that matches your operating system on your computer.
- If you are using Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10, it's probably 64 bit. So the one that says "windows64.exe." Windows XP and older likely want "windows32.exe." If you're unsure, you can try the java version at the top.
- If you're using Linux, you shouldn't need me to explain.
- If you're using Mac, shame on you. You should use the one that says "macos64.exe" or you can probably try the java version at the top.

Step #3: You will need to type this exact string into your chat in STO: /combatlog 1
That will enable the combat log in game. It doesn't matter which chat, btw. This must be done each time you login in order for CLR to have a log to read for that day.

Step #4: Once you have downloaded CLR and typed /combatlog 1 in chat, you'll need to alt+tab out of STO and start CLR. You can do this by unzipping the folder you downloaded and opening the file labelled "CombatLogReader." You will then have to click "Browse" in the upper left corner and select the CombatLog file on your computer

NOTE: It's typically located at: C:\Program Files (x86)\Star Trek Online_en\Star Trek Online\Live\logs\GameClient for Windows users.

Step #5: You can create a shortcut to CLR by right-clicking the icon you used to open the program in step 4, selecting "Send to" and then "Desktop" from the next menu.
